Chronic Midge

Hook: Size 18 to as small as you can go

Body: Black thread. Other colors work too

Rib: Black or blue Krystal Flash. When stretched black Krystal Flash turns bluish to purplish.

Thorax: Dubbed fur. A sparkle fur was used here

Wing: Small piece of white closed cell foam.

This pattern was developed by a friend, Rob Merrill, in Driggs Idaho. It is called the "Chronic Midge" because chironomid was too much of a mouthful to get out clearly early one morning. This fly is supper effective anywhere there are midges, which is just about anywhere you will find trout. I have personally had some very good results with this fly on the Madison, Gallatin, Yellowstone, Big Horn and the Mighty Mo. Fish this either as a nymph if there are no risers or in the surface film to sippers.
